At what age and how should activities to prevent eating disorders begin in schools?
There are several ways to prevent eating disorders. Generally, it's best to approach it indirectly , avoiding materials like documentaries, films, or articles that directly address eating disorders. These are very sensitive issues that are best discussed in safe spaces with the guidance of qualified professionals.
At school, from a very young age and across all subjects, it is recommended to work on communication, personal, digital, and interpersonal skills . Strengthening self-esteem, emotional management, social and communication skills, and critical thinking regarding the use of new technologies, social media, and the media are crucial protective and preventative factors.
As educators, we must also pay close attention to the materials we use. It is very important that there is body diversity in the materials (handouts, books, toys, films, etc.) and that this diversity is represented with respect and acceptance. We should also consider the presence of role models who challenge established gender stereotypes.
